Kidsafe will be delivering the statewide ‘Safe Seats, Safe Kids’ program in partnership with Neighbourhood Houses Victoria until December 2023, to provide free child car restraint checks for Victorian families.
Correctly fitted child car restraints and booster seats play a critical part in protecting children from serious injury and death in the event of a car accident.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that over 70% of child car restraints are incorrectly fitted or used. Child car restraints that are incorrectly fitted pose a serious safety risk to children travelling in those restraints.
To help combat the issue of incorrectly fitted child car restraints and improve safety outcomes for children travelling in vehicles, the Victorian State Government has committed $4 million to deliver a new, state-wide program of free child car restraint checks.
Kidsafe Victoria acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government and the program will be delivered in partnership with Neighbourhood Houses Victoria (NHVic), with pilot events commencing in February, followed by a full program of state-wide events from March 2020 – December 2023.
This program will provide free child car restraint fittings and safety checks that meet the highest standards of quality and industry best-practice.
Parents and carers are invited to book in for a free child car restraint fittings and safety check in their Local Government Area.
Education and activities to assist parents and carers in choosing, using and checking their child car restraints, as well as other related child safety information, will be available at these local events.
Accredited and experienced fitters will be engaged to perform these checks at events to ensure child car restraints are installed and are being used correctly, as well as to educate families so they are equipped to check that their child is safe in the car every trip.
To register your interest for a free child car restraint check, or to search and book an event in your local area please visit the Safe Seats Safe Kids website.
