GEORGINA JOSEPHINE'S LEGACY

In Australia, the number of children who tragically lost their lives in driveway incidents each year is heartbreaking. The Georgina Josephine Foundation supports families affected by these incidents and promotes prevention awareness.

In April 2011, a typical Saturday for Emma and Peter Cockburn turned into a nightmare. While Emma mowed the lawn, their 15-month-old daughter, Georgina, managed to enter the garage. Peter, returning home, unknowingly reversed his ute into the garage, where Georgina was unseen behind the trailer. Despite immediate CPR efforts, Georgina could not be saved.

Emma and Peter, who thought their home was safe for their children, realised the overlooked risk of the garage access door. Driveway runovers can happen anywhere, due to children’s unpredictability and vehicle blind spots. Most incidents involve a driver unaware of the child’s presence, often a parent or family friend.

Georgina Josephine’s Legacy encourages vigilance and preventive measures to protect children from these tragic incidents.

To assist in making your driveway Kidsafe, make sure that you always SUPERVISE, SEPARATE and SEE.

SUPERVISE

  • Actively supervise children around cars, driveways and carparks.
  • If you’re alone and need to move the vehicle, secure young children in the vehicle.
  • Ensure children who are not in the vehicle are kept away and supervised by an adult holding their hand.

SEPARATE

  • Treat the driveway like a road.
  • Create safe play areas away from garages and driveways.
  • Install high handles on garage doors and fences, and use self-closing doors and gates to prevent access to the driveway.

SEE

  • Use reversing sensors and cameras to reduce blind spots, but do not rely solely on them.
  • Always walk around the vehicle before moving it to ensure no children are nearby.
  • Say goodbye from a safe distance away from the driveway.
